Gary Rydstrom, MPSE

Gary was born in Chicago and raised in Elmhurst, Illinois, where he decided he wanted to work in film by the age of 12. Ironically, the first films that excited him were the silent comedies of Chaplin and Keaton. Gary relates that "after making many bad Super 8 movies, I went to film school at the University of Southern California, where I made less-bad 16mm movies, and became interested in post-production."

A USC professor recommended Gary to Lucasfilm in 1983. During his twenty years at Skywalker Sound, Gary has worked as a sound designer, supervisor, and re-recording mixer on a wide range of feature films, theme park shows, commercials and shorts.

Gary has received many nominations for a variety of awards for his sound work, and has won nine Oscars for Best Sound and Best Sound Editing, MPSE Golden Reels, Cinema Audio Society Awards and British Academy Awards.

Gary has returned to the USC School of Cinema-Television as a guest lecturer. He has also given seminars at the American Film Institute and the Directors Guild, and numerous presentations on film sound throughout the country.

Since 1998 he has been Skywalker's Director of Creative Operation. Currently, Gary is working at Pixar Animation Studios, where he is developing projects to direct. "I will always stay involved in film sound.  I have been living happily ever after with my wife, Cindy, in San Anselmo, California."
